Se presenta en este ensayo la relación entre las unidades de información, la innovación, la producción y la productividad como pilares importantes en la sociedad actual. Se destaca la posición de la biblioteca universitaria como unidades innovadoras y la biblioteca digital como un campo de la investigación en el cual se trabaja hacia la migración con aplicaciones prácticas, desarrollo de hardware y software que conducen a interesantes problemas teóricos en disciplinas como la computación, economía, sociología, con alta utilidad para la sociedad. Se mencionan algunas de las áreas de investigación en el campo de la biblioteca digital dentro del contexto de la sociedad del saber, la cual se renueva constantemente encumbrada por los progresos que experimentan las tecnologías de la información al permitir la difusión del conocimiento en un mundo global en el cual la información tiene un valor de mercado.
