Objective. It is crucial that the scientific field and the media field become increasingly closer and more connected, and that universities adapt to the slight innovations in this ecosystem. Thus, this research aims to answer how social networks are guided in the process of institutional scientific dissemination. The objective is to analyze the institutionalization of scientific dissemination through social networks in Brazilian federal universities. Theoretical frameworks from Information Science, Communication, and Education were mobilized to understand the different conceptions of scientific dissemination and to strengthen the understanding of its dialogic-communicative nature. Method. The literature review supported the construction of two script models to analyze the institutional guidelines for scientific dissemination through documented social networks and the practices of institutional scientific dissemination on social networks. The analysis criteria were applied to a sample of 35 Brazilian federal universities, based on data collected from official virtual pages and profiles on the digital platforms YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Results. Objective and subjective parameters were developed that allowed the analysis of the information, from a descriptive point of view, to understand the characteristics of scientific dissemination documented and carried out on social networks. This situational knowledge supported the suggested interventions for improving what was observed. Conclusions. Considering the leading role of federal universities and the instrumentalization of social networks, the analysis adopted a particular conception of scientific dissemination that is non-exclusive, that is, it considers a set of activities that are not restricted to just one model of public communication of science. The accessible, centralizing and non-unidirectional aspects of scientific dissemination formed parameters for analysis that aimed to answer “what to do?”, “what is being done?” and “what can be done?”.
