Objective. This study investigates the innovative potential of the OpenAlex tool, which emerges as a free alternative in the field of informational metrics. The primary objective is to evaluate the capability of this tool in comparison with other conventional metric platforms. Method. The research was conducted in two distinct stages: the first consisted of a detailed exploration of the functionalities offered by OpenAlex; the second stage involved a direct comparison of the publication and citation metrics provided by OpenAlex with those obtained from other traditional platforms. Results. The results demonstrated that OpenAlex is a viable and effective tool, offering metrics that complement those provided by conventional platforms, with a focus on its utility in the comparative analysis of publications and citations. Conclusions. It is concluded that OpenAlex has significant potential to be used as a complementary tool to traditional platforms, particularly in the analysis of publication and citation metrics, thereby contributing to greater accessibility and diversity of metric sources.
