Objective. To analyze the visibility and online attention of scientific productions deposited in Brazilian Institutional Repositories, using altmetrics. Method. The study adopts a quantitative descriptive approach, analyzing the online visibility and attention of productions deposited in institutional repositories based on altmetric metrics. The research was conducted in two main stages: (i) mapping and selection of institutional repositories and (ii) data collection and altmetric analysis. Results. he distribution of the institutions that maintain the IRs is made up of 81 repositories linked to public universities, 44 to private institutions, 33 to public research institutions and 26 to Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology. However, only 11 of these repositories, corresponding to 42.3%, have attention data available in Altmetric Explorer. Conclusions. The analysis of online attention revealed significant disparities between the institutional repositories examined. UNESP's IR stood out with 86.5% of the total number of mentions in the corpus analyzed. The social network X (formerly Twitter) is the most used social network for sharing the publications made available by the IRs. The results show that although Brazilian institutional repositories play an important role in the dissemination of scientific knowledge, their online attention and visibility on social media is still limited.
