Objetive. The main purpose of this paper is to identify and describe open research data management practices in the libraries of Argentine private universities. The specific objectives are: to identify open access and/or research data policies; to inquire about the degree of implementation of research data; to establish what type of research data is being managed; to know the level of participation and commitment of libraries in the research data management infrastructure in their institutions; to establish whether libraries link with the research areas of their respective universities; to determine what type of research data services libraries offer; to find out if the libraries carry out research data awareness, training or advisory actions; to determine if the libraries have trained staff with research data skills and knowledge; to inquire about the perception of library directors regarding the demands of research data management by the libraries; and finally, to investigate if the libraries have future plans for data management services.
Method. Descriptive research using direct observation of university web pages and/or institutional repositories and a semistructured questionnaire with open and closed questions for library directors as data collection techniques.
Results. The degree of implementation of research data in Argentine private universities is incipient, since, in spite of having institutional repositories of publications, the development of a research data repository or collaboration agreements with a thematic or inter-institutional repository is very new. According to what has been investigated, it can be stated that research data management is minimal, since only one institution has a single record of a research dataset referred to a workbook.
Conclusions. Private university libraries in Argentina, taking into account their particular context, have a great challenge in the coming years to continue adapting to national open access legislation. Working together with other libraries, researchers and other scientific and technical institutions in the country will surely help to consolidate the management of research data.
