Objective. This study aims to map Open Access electronic scientific journals in the area of Information Science globally to identify which ones use social media.
Method. It adopts a descriptive and explanatory methodology with a quantitative approach, the research used the Directory of Open Access Journals database and the Altmetrics platform for data collection.
Results. The results show that among the 157 journals identified, 52 have a presence on the social media platforms Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn. The largest concentration of these journals is in Brazil and the United States, with emphasis on the Facebook and X platforms. The results indicate the need for more research on the growing importance of social media as a strategic tool for scientific dissemination.
Conclusions. The study concludes that it is important to encourage Open Access journals to adopt practices that increase their visibility and promote more democratic access to scientific knowledge through scientific marketing on the social web.
