Abstract

Objective. To identify whether and how Brazilian scientific journals in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS), classified as A in Qualis Capes 2017–2020, adopt image descriptions in articles to ensure accessibility for people with visual impairments.

Method. Bibliographic and documentary research with a multi-method approach. The sample consisted of journals indexed in the Library and Information Science Database and classified in the Sucupira Platform. Editorial guidelines and image descriptions in articles from the Revista Brasileira de Biblioteconomia e Documentação — the only journal recommending this practice — were analyzed.

Results. Only one journal recommends image descriptions, but without specific guidelines. The analyzed descriptions were insufficient, omitting essential information.

Conclusions. The lack of standardization highlights the need for clear guidelines to ensure full accessibility to visual content, promoting inclusion and equity in scientific communication.

Jaqueline Angela Casaes e Silva, Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro

Currently pursuing a Professional Master's Degree in Library Science at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (2024). Bachelor's Degree in Library Science with an emphasis on Information Management in Organizations from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (2023). Member of the extension project "Application of the principles of extension and intention in the Theory of Concept" (2022). Participated in the following projects: "Learning to be a Librarian" at UNIRIO, where he contributed to library practices (2018-2019); "UNIRIO de Leitores" (2021), in which he led activities such as Story Time, Poetry Battle and Reading Circle; and "Memórias da Biblioteconomia" (2019-2020), a documentary about graduates, professors and staff of the UNIRIO School of Library Science. Has interests in the areas of Information Science, Library Science, Information and Knowledge Management, Accessibility and Assistive Technology.

Janicy Aparecida Pereira Rocha, Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro

Professor at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro - area: Information and Technology, where she is a member of the Accessibility Center at UNIRIO. Collaborating professor of the Postgraduate Program in Document and Archive Management (PPGARQ/UNIRIO). Leader of the research group: "Trends Observatory: Interoperability and Metadata for Knowledge Organization". Between 2020 and 2022, she coordinated the Special Tutoring Project entitled 'Pedagogical Tutoring Center - Visual Impairment', with the objective of assisting students with visual impairment in overcoming attitudinal and communicational barriers encountered in everyday academic life. PhD in Information Science from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (2018). Master in Information Science from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (2013). Bachelor in Information Systems from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (2010). His research interests include the social aspects of technology use, working on the following topics: "planning, design and evaluation of inclusive and adaptable information services"; "digital accessibility"; "Human-Computer Interaction"; "information users"; "information practices", "metadata standards" and "interoperability".
