Abstract

Objective. To analyze, using a webometric approach, the characteristics of web citations for documents in the Lume repository on the academic digital social network tool ResearchGate. Method. Descriptive research, using quantitative and qualitative methods, specifically web mentions of URL on Google Scholar and document analysis, using three attributes: affiliation, type of document cited, and type of citing document. Results. A total of 398 affiliations were identified, with UFRGS being the institution linked to the item with the highest number of web mentions, providing positive evidence of the visibility and recognition of the Lume repository by the community itself. Furthermore, the institutions with the highest recurrence of web mentions are from the southern region of Brazil, indicating that geographically closer institutions tend to establish strong ties. In addition, 134 international institutions were identified in the documents containing web mentions of the Lume repository, which demonstrates an interface for the internationalization of research produced at UFRGS. It was evident that theses, dissertations, and undergraduate final projects are the Lume documents that receive the most web mentions, types that had more restricted access and that, with the implementation of institutional repositories, have gained greater visibility. In contrast, the citing documents are concentrated in journal articles, papers published at events, as well as books and book chapters, results that are in line with the most significant document types in the context of scientific communication. Conclusions. Despite the need, in some cases, for an additional manual search for files available on ResearchGate or for the Lume documents mentioned, it is considered that web mentions of URL have considerable potential for exploring the presence of repositories in digital social networking tools, as well as in other areas of the web. Furthermore, the use of Google Scholar as a mechanism in the strategy for tracking web mentions of URL, within the scope of ResearchGate, is a viable and appropriate resource for the proposed analysis.
