Abstract

Like all human creations, institutions transform and evolve over time. Libraries also have changed to respond the needs of its users. Academic libraries physical spaces are one of the turned aspects, an example are the Learning Commons (spaces for collaborative work in academic libraries). The main purpose of this paper is to expose the characteristics of the Learning Commons model with a brief account of the history of planning and construction of academic libraries. This paper also aims to present the manner in which a Learning Commons has been implemented at the library of Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), Campus Monterrey in Mexico.

Larisa González Martínez, Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey

Larisa González Martínez es Licenciada en Historia por la Universidad de Guanajuato.  Ha trabajado en diversos centros de información y en proyectos de rescate del patrimonio documental en instituciones como el Archivo Histórico del Estado de Guanajuato, la Biblioteca Armando Olivares, la Biblioteca Central Estatal de Guanajuato “Wigberto Jiménez Moreno”  y la Casa Generalicia de los Hermanos de las Escuelas Cristianas en Roma, Italia.

Actualmente trabaja en el Departamento de Programas de Instrucción a Usuarios de la biblioteca del Tecnológico de Monterrey, campus Monterrey. También se ha desempeñado como bibliógrafa de los Departamento de Relaciones Internacionales, Académico de Emprendimiento y Gestión Empresarial y Talento Humano en esta institución, además de formar parte del comité organizador de la Feria Internacional del Libro de Monterrey.  Ha tenido una activa participación en congresos de educación y de bibliotecarios en la región noreste de México, además de que ha llevado a cabo proyectos de paleografía para la Biblioteca Digital Mexicana.  Asimismo, es locutora y promotora cultural de Frecuencia Tec 94.9 FM.
